2017-2018 Officers

Nicholas Mendoza

President

From the darkness of space, a miracle descended onto this planet. With a loud crackling of the sky, his vessel ripped through the wind. All stared up in awe, subconsciously uttering “Nicholas.” With the arrival of this treasure, a new age of infrastructure dawned. The hurdles of our time no longer mattered, for he would be the one to solve it all; our modern day Atlas. To take things into a serious note, I am Nicholas Mendoza. I hold the title of President of NVC’s SHPE Chapter. I graduated from Vallejo High School’s Green Engineering Academy in 2015. I am majoring in civil engineering, with a focus on structural systems. My life goal is to help build bridges, that even after my body breaks down, will continue to support the future. I took up my position in SHPE because I saw an opportunity to improve on it and help it stride. When I move on to pursue other opportunities, I hope to do so leaving NVC SHPE structurally sound and heading towards the sky.

Antonio Soriano

Outreach Coordinator

My name is Antonio Soriano and I’m a first generation student pursuing Civil Engineering at Napa Valley College. For the past year in half, I have become an active member of SHPE. Never in my life have I ever been a part of an awesome organization such as SHPE. Here, I learned to fundraise for our SHPE events, become a supportive team member and has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. My involvement in SHPE has not only helped me grow, but also allowed me to find purpose as a leader. I grew up not having opportunities to be a leader and be part of a Familia although SHPE has provided that for me. As an Outreach Coordinator, I intend to initiate and develop key relationships between individuals and groups around the community within our organization. I also intend to inspire the Next Generation of innovators by creating a stronger connection within the SHPE Jr. Chapter at Napa High School. Here, I will act as the link between the old organization and the new people it aims to assist in. Likewise, my goals are to increase SHPE awareness and help each other grow.

Vanessa Corona

Secretary

Hi everyone! My name is Vanessa Corona. I am a first-generation college student. I graduated from Armijo High School June 2016. I am a Mathematics major hoping to transfer to UCSD, UCLA, or UCD Fall 2018. I want to get a Masters degree, then later on, a PhD in Mathematics one day. I do a lot of community work, I volunteer at my church every weekend and tutor middle/high school kids in Fairfield. When I’m not volunteering, I like to play video games or play tennis. I’m currently the secretary at NVC SHPE. I joined SHPE because my friends encouraged me to join and actually really liked the club. Even though I am not an engineering major, many of my friends are, and I like to tell them about this club and encourage them to come to our events because they are very beneficial.

Joaquin Borrayo

Treasurer

My name is Joaquin Borrayo, a 2nd-year college student. My strong suits are mathematics and physics so naturally, engineering was the way to go. More specifically, electrical engineering. Since my senior year of high school, I have been a part of SHPE because it provides opportunities to explore the engineering field and make connections with students that hold similar interests and professional engineers. I hope to keep working with SHPE to provide other students with the same opportunities I’ve been given, to learn about engineering and obtain leadership skills.

Alfonso Rios-Ochoa

Public Relations Officer

When faced with the daunting task of piercing the muddled sea of obscurity, NVC SHPE was adrift in the perilous waves. However, the one who will propel them out has arrived and his name is Alfonso. Hopefully, that little quip entertained you, I am Alfonso Rios-Ochoa is a 2nd year college student at Napa Valley College. I serve as the Public Relations Officer for the Napa Valley College’s SHPE Chapter. I plan to transfer to SJSU or SDSU in the fall of of 2018 to pursue a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Throughout my childhood I was always interested in taking apart objects and observing them to discover what makes it tick. My biggest motivation is to become a role model that my friends and family can look up to and inspire them to pursue their dreams. I hope to continue my involvement with SHPE and support their mission of spreading STEM awareness in the Hispanic community. When I'm not preoccupied with academics I enjoy spending my free time working, going to the gym, and cruising around on my longboard.

Maria Vargas

Vice President

Hi my name is Maria Vargas and I am the current VP for NVC SHPE and a member since 2015. I am pursuing a degree in civil engineering and will be transferring in 2018. I want to encourage people who wish to pursue a degree in engineering that work hard work and dedication, this can be achieved. In my free time I like to swim, play tennis, hike, search for coins, and try new things. I also love cats, minerals and learning about earthquakes.

Cristian Guzman

Webmaster

My name is Cristian Guzman, I'm a 2nd year college student and studying to be a mechanical engineer. I first heard of SHPE my first year at the college and soon I was fully onboard. Ever since I was a kid I loved to build things or take apart electronics to see how they worked so by the time I got to high school I new I wanted to be an engineer. I'm working to get a B.S. in mechanical engineering and hope to transfer to either UCB, UCLA, UCD, or a state school like San Jose or San Diego. I appreciated what the club and senior members provided to support the new members. When I started high school there was a club that took the time to provide help and support to new high school students, from then I was inspired to be part of clubs that helped various groups grow and achieve their goals. SHPE has given me not only the chance to pursue my academic goal but also provide assistance to those in the STEM field as well as the community.
