Meet the Officers

Diego Velazquez

Co-President

My name is Diego Velazquez, I am a 3rd-year transfer student majoring in mechanical engineering. After I finish my general education here at Napa Valley College I plan on transferring to either UC San Diego or UC Berkeley by Spring 2022. As a kid I always enjoyed building and fixing things by using whatever pieces of scrap I had at my disposal, because of my past experiences I have always been fairly confident that I wanted to become an engineer. However, after I joined SHPE I knew engineering was the career I wanted to pursue because of all the like minded people I’ve met. Not only did SHPE allow me to meet and build connections with some amazing people, but it also helped me acquire new social and communications skills. I became a board member because of the positive impact SHPE had on my life, and because I want others to have access to the opportunities SHPE has to offer.

Sierra Rieken

Co-President

Hello, I am a second-year environmental engineering student at Napa Valley College. In the Fall of 2022, I plan to transfer to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.  My path into engineering started my junior year when I completed a project for the Bridge Competition hosted by the Engineering Alliance for the Arts. I emerged from this competition with a drive to focus my education in engineering and find ways to better our world through science. I am passionate about minimizing my carbon footprint and am eager to be a part of long term solutions to end pollution.

Those close to me understand I am driven, in both work and school. I balance this drive by creating art, spending time outdoors, and pursuing deals at local thrift stores. When I first joined SHPE, it was partly to check a box my counselor suggested for college. However, since then, I have grown to appreciate SHPE as a family of like minded members who support each other. This club provides many opportunities and friends that I hope to carry on long past my days at NVC. I am happy to be a part of this team and am excited to help you in any way I can.

Vice President

Hi everyone! My name is Luz Robles, and I’m a sophomore at Napa Valley College. I’m very excited to be one of the board members for SHPE NVC this year! I plan on transferring to UC Davis with a major in Sustainable Environmental Design. I joined SHPE because in it, I immediately found a sense of belonging I couldn’t find anywhere else. It’s an organization dedicated to helping students like me, and continually inspires me to be the best version of myself I can be. I couldn’t ask for a better SHPE familia!

Jared Martinez

Treasurer

Hello, my name is Jared Martinez and this is my 3rd year at Napa Valley College. I am a computer science major due to my early adoption of technology and passion I have for software. I knew I first wanted to major in computer science when I was creating video games in middle school. I was naturally good at it and my friends loved playing them which made me want to program even more. I am currently looking at transferring to UC Davis but I also have my eyes on UC Berkley, and UC Merced. I joined SHPE for multiple reasons. First, it was a great opportunity to meet with other individuals that had common majors and goals in mind. We could talk about our classes and help each other if one of us were struggling with something. SHPE is also a great place for networking. I have met so many SHPE members from northern California when working on the Designing for a VUCA World Competition. We are now connected on Linkedin and it is great to see where we have all grown from since starting that challenge.

Mariela Chavez

Webmaster

Hi, if you are reading this you are an amazing human being! Anyway, my name is Mariela, this is my third year in Napa Valley College. My major is Civil Engineering. In the future, I would like to transfer to Sacramento State. Last summer I participated in the STEM summer bridge program and they encouraged us to join a club related to our major. Last fall, during Club rush I saw the SHPE club. Since I’m not social I was nervous to join the club. Now that I look back to that day, I should have not been nervous. Everyone in this club is welcoming and helpful. Overall, they are amazing people that deserve the best in life and I'm so glad I joined this club!
